Raising The Moon by SeptilSix Raising The Moon by SeptilSix
Go check out the song this was made for: [link]

Inspired by Luna and the last time she raises the moon, before being overtaken by darkness and becoming Nightmare Moon. Now, she doesn't really raise the moon this way, I just depicted it like this to show how she might have felt inside. As if her duty became more of a chore and she felt trapped in it...

Any feedback and critique on both the picture and song would be greatly appreciated :D

At first I laughed, thinking this was comical. Then, I saw a headcanon and I got a bit worried.

I like how you depict your headcanon as a possibility, and treat it like a possibility with things like "might have felt inside".

Art I enjoy, headcanon I don't see any problems with/makes sense and the presentation of the headcanon just makes me smile. Take a favorite and a watch.

Well thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. There's often a lot of differing opinions when it comes to stuff like this, but this seemed like a plausible scenario and it felt like an interesting piece to draw :D
And thanks for the watch and fav as well! I really appreciate it :)

All I can think about when I see this is imagnation. I don't know you that well but I really like the way you... Hmm it's har to explain but the way you give the piece something that makes it worth admiring! You are really good way better than a lot of artists I know and I'm not only talking technique here. I know this might sound silly but I hope you'll keep on creating :)

That's really good to hear man really good. There's just so many artists with great potetial who quit it for all sorts of stupid reasons. Glad you wont be one of them :)

I definitely get what your saying, and some artists seem like they're just looking for an opportunity they can use as an excuse to quite art :/ Though I do actually feel like giving up sometimes (art is hard! xD), I know that if I just keep on going I'll slowly improve and things will get easier :D
And comments like the ones you've left in the past are a HUGE motivator and encouragement for me to keep on going, so thank you for that! This is really an awesome community here on dA :D

I hear ya! I just started this whole drawing thing and found it a lot harder that first imagined... Luckily I'm far too stubbon to stop here :3 And of cause positive comments always helps me to move over my mistakes and improve them! Not that I mean I want to improve my mistakes but you know what I mean...

Hehe I always enjoy leaving a comment on art I really like ^^ and yes indeed deviantART chaged my life.

I too am quite stubborn, but that can probably be attributed to me being part Scottish xD And it's always a good thing to be able to learn from mistakes and improve them, or...not improve them. Or make mistakes and improve them by not making them again, which still would be improving your mistakes... And I have now thoroughly confused myself....

Well no offense I think it's a funny picture in a literal sense.

"Well actually we just tie it up to Luna and let her drag it around!"

Oh gawd she's falling asleep again!

I really like this and I find it hard to believe that this is simply color pencil, it seems more like oil from how rich it is!

With those coloured pencils you beginning to be the master of coloured pencils! Really, is there anything I could not like here? Luna's pose is great (but...I think she needs some stars on her mane). Her shading is wonderful and I like the glow around her too.
I don't have much time to listen to this song now, but I promise to add an additional comment about it when I'll have some :).

Thanks! I'm still learning, but it's getting easier and easier to use them and try out different techniques.

And I agree with you on the stars. I would have added them actually, but my gel-pen was completely empty. I'll probably update it once I get a new pen though :D

Now something about the song...the song overall is not so bad (except for the outro - it's just weird to me and doesn't suit it at all, the last minute is worse than previous ones too), but I don't think it's something memorable. Maybe it's just me - I think so, because I have a different taste of music. It just means that just I didn't enjoy it as much as the others might, that's all.

Wowie...

Where to start...

This is coloured pencil? Very well blended background, I like the glow you've given Luna and how she's sort of piercing the dark, shadowy cloud layer. And I like how the darkness is cloudy and vaporous like that. It helps build the dark dramatic atmosphere.

From a technical perspective the rope should be taught if she's pulling the moon. It breaks suspension of disbelief a little for me but that might just be because I naturally nitpick details. On an emotional level this might better convey the feelings you're trying to show, how the moon is an anchor, a prison. With a loose rope it's almost effortless to pull the moon up, not the burden you want to convey.

Also being night and having the moon as the only light source Luna should be more shadowed on the front side. But artistically this might look less pretty and emotionally I'm not sure what that would convey. You could always just say Luna's magic and glowy anyways cause... Princess magic or something... So uh... This part should probably be ignored.

I really liked the magic Japanese marker stars you did here: [link]
Luna's mane needs to have Pretty Pony Princess sparkles!
I like what you did again with the overlap and the transparent bit.

Luna's face isn't as emotional as it could be. Right now she has an emotion of almost silent brooding, of pensive thought. I think it would work better with some teeth gnashing rage or a pained grimace. Of course that all depends on what exactly you want to convey. Also her face is tiny and hard to draw on :p

I like the way her wing is posed, half way flapped, it feels like a powerful stroke of magic pony princess wingness! Errr... That sentence sorta lost itself there... It's a good wing pose, conveys power and grace.

Her leg pose looks like a leap, it doesn't feel like a struggle against a chore and anchor. Perhaps you could try a running pose? Logically of course this makes no sense at all cause running on air is a bit... useless. But emotionally it would look like she were struggling forward against her anchor and burden.

Overall I like the atmosphere, the palate is simple effective and uncluttered. However a few small changes could make the piece a lot more emotionally charged. There is a sense of power, grace and elegance but not one of raw, effort and struggle. She looks like a God, not like a person, bound by duty and revolting against those bonds, pulling and struggling from her charge. (I use the word struggle too much... I like it!)

p.s. Remember I have no idea what I'm doing and I don't actually do art so anything I say has a good chance of being artistically illogical!

Wow! Thanks for going so in-depth! It really helps to know how every aspect appears to someone else, that way I can evaluate how I see things compared to how someone else sees things. But yes, this is colored pencil. I've actually been using solvents and wax sticks to blend lately, so that's what gives it a more "paint-y" look. And I completely agree with everything you said, it could have been much more emotional. Because, well, there's nearly no emotion at all on her face right now! Having her eyes open with an angered expression may have been better... And a "running pose" makes sense, even if she's flying it would have looked like more of a struggle.
And it does need Pretty Pony Princess sparkles! My marker of Japanese magic is completely dry though... So I'll have to wait till I get a new one to add the pizzazz. I like that word, pizzazz. Plenty of zzzzzz's. Though "struggle" is a very nice word as well...

But again thank you for the feedback, it really is a HUGE help to me as I try to figure out this mystery that we call art :D

Wow, I love the symbolism. As if Luna felt that her duty was unappreciated and holding her back. So sad. Luna, the moon gives the night a light! It gives us hope! When will people realize that?
